Moving to the cloud can reduce costs, improve reliability and make it much easier to scale. But a migration without a plan can lead to downtime, surprise bills and frustrated teams. Here is a simple roadmap to get it right.
1. Assess what you have
List your applications, databases and integrations. For each one, note how critical it is to the business, how it is used, and any compliance needs. This helps you decide what to move first and what to leave for later.
2. Choose the right approach for each system
- Rehost: move the application as it is. Fastest, with fewer immediate benefits.
- Replatform: make small changes, such as moving to a managed database, to gain reliability and lower maintenance.
- Refactor: redesign the application to use cloud-native services. More effort, but the biggest long-term gains.
- Replace: switch to a ready-made SaaS product when it meets your needs.
3. Plan for security and cost from day one
Set up access controls, encryption and backups before moving any data. Use budgets and alerts so you always know what you are spending, and review your resources regularly to remove anything you do not need.
4. Migrate in phases
Start with a lower-risk system to build confidence and refine your process. Test thoroughly, run old and new systems side by side where possible, and have a rollback plan.
5. Optimize after the move
Migration is the beginning, not the end. Once you are in the cloud, automate deployments, right-size your servers and add monitoring to keep improving performance and cost.
