Liferay upgrades and DXP to Community Edition or Free Tier migration
Since the 2026.Q1 release, Liferay runs as one unified platform unlocked by an activation key. Enterprise customers use a subscriber key, while the free Liferay DXP Free Tier provides the core capabilities that were previously in the Community Edition. The source code stays available under the LGPL licence.
Moving away from a DXP subscription is therefore less about code and more about what you give up: the Free Tier receives only the first release of each quarterly update, has no official support, has its own licence terms and cluster limits, and leaves out some enterprise features. We review how your portal is really used, plan alternatives for any gaps, and set up updates, monitoring and support before anything changes.
If you run an older version, reaching the 2026 platform is a version upgrade. Recent releases also move from Java EE (javax) to Jakarta EE (jakarta) packages, so we update and test your custom modules, portlets and themes as part of a controlled, step-by-step upgrade from Liferay 6.x or 7.x.
